Emotional Intelligence essay free essay sample
Traditionally qualities and traits connected to leadership have included determination, toughness, and vision and have course intelligence. However, it was Daniel Goleman who initially highlighted the essential attribute of ââ¬Å"emotional intelligenceâ⬠which includes self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skill and that, when lacking, leaders are not truly the best they can be. Emotional intelligence is the key ingredient in the complicated mix of any exemplary leader. Leadership is not about personality; itââ¬â¢s about behavior and a noticeable set of skills. Exemplary leaders passionately believe that they can make a difference. They envision the future, creating an ideal and unique image of something greater. Through their magnetism and quiet persuasion, exemplary leaders enlist others in their dreams. They breathe life into their visions and get people to see exciting possibilities for the future. Exemplary leaders envision the future by visualizing exciting and ennobling possibilities creating a roadmap for getting there. In the Managed Heart: Commercialization of Human Feeling, Arlie Hochschild pointed out the difference between physical and emotional labor, and the importance of emotional intelligence which identified the need for monitoring emotional intelligence at work. This essay will highlight the need for managers to have knowledge of emotional intelligence in order to successfully manage in the workplace, and in order to achieve optimal employee and customer satisfaction. In order to successfully implement exceptional leadership qualities a manager must familiarize and understand the concept of emotional intelligence as well as develop a strong working relationship with his/her employees. This essay will focus on three aspects emotional intelligence implementation in the workplace. There are three aspects of implementing characteristics of emotional intelligence that this essay will focus on. Firstly, how a managersââ¬â¢ understanding of emotional intelligence affects the employees. Second, how emotional intelligence in the workplace affects the customer. Third, how significant the leadership of a manger with emotional intelligence can influence employees in the workplace benefitting workplace effectiveness and efficiency. When a manager establishes a professional relationship with their employees, they must not only be aware of the employeesââ¬â¢ work ethic but also their emotions and how they interact with customers and other coworkers. The best way a manager can be influential and support their employeeââ¬â¢s emotions and feelings is by possessing sufficient knowledge in emotional intelligence (EI). Emotional intelligence is ââ¬Ëthe ability to perceive emotions, to access and generate emotions so as to assist thought, to understand emotions and emotional knowledge, and to reflectively regulate emotions so as to romote emotional and intellectual growthââ¬â¢ (Mayer amp; Salovey, 1997:5). Employees who are experiencing personal issues at home can potentially bring them into the workplace. A manager who is well informed of emotional intelligence is able to differentiate and identify the difference between personal issues that occur at home and those that are caused in the workplace. Many org anizations now make it imperative to implement positive emotional labor into the work environment. Ashkanasy amp; Daus (2002, p. 9) claim ââ¬Ëemployees who bottle up negative emotions and express positive ones, can lead to emotional exhaustion and burnoutââ¬â¢. Based on the affective events theory Ashkanasy amp; Daus (2002, p. 79); if emotional issues continue to be unresolved in the workplace it can potentially lead to impulsive acts such as quitting, anti social behavior and unproductive work. However, having sufficient knowledge in EI in collaboration with a positive attitude encouragement campaign can influence employees to be in control of their emotions without management being directly involved. For example, Best Buys awarded their employees with smiley face stickers so that customers were able to identify that they would provide exceptionally good service. Through this, a sense of pride and satisfaction is achieved through performing job roles the best they can on a professional and emotional level. Without an understanding of emotional intelligence a manager will not be able to successfully develop a complete relationship with their employees thus affecting workplace efficiency and effectiveness. The relationship between a manager and their employees is equally as important as the relationship between an employee and the customer. Naturally a mutually positive approach from both parties is expected in order to establish the best relationship possible however there are various determinants that can prevent this from occurring. King and Porter (2013, p. 81) stated that employees make stereotypical assumptions in a workplace environment to members of another department if they know they are not knowledgeable of certain content or terminologies. Harmless misconceptions can escalate to aggravation depending on the current mood of the said employee. This basic principle that occurs regularly in the workplace can be applied to a customer service workplace environment and potentially lead to dissatisfaction of customers and complaints. Similarly to King and Porterââ¬â¢s workplace scenario, lack of EI in the workplace can also have both positive and negative effects in a marketing approach. For example: Emotional intelligence in marketing exchanges (2011, p. 8-95) Talks about the importance of familiarizing customer orientation. ââ¬ËCustomer orientation requires sales professionals to engage in behaviors that increase customer satisfaction and avoid behaviors leading to customer dissatisfactionââ¬â¢ (Dunlap, Dotson and Chambers 1988, p. 178). This means that employees need to be consistent in expressing a positive approach to every sale regardless of priority or importance. To obtain a reputable well renown business it i s imperative that customer loyalty is considered to be ultimately the highest of priorities. In order for this to be achieved employees need to feel confident they can communicate with their managers knowing that they are experienced in successfully dealing with emotional issues. A manager with an understanding of emotional intelligence is able utilize both negative and positive feelings and express them in way which influences his/her employees. Negative emotions such as anger, sadness or annoyance do not necessarily have to be disregarded in a workplace environment. Jennifer M George (2000, p. 031-1032) states that a manager who experiencing anger due to the discovery of sexual harassment in the workplace, can use his anger to promptly eradicate any harassment in the organization. Ultimately, effective leadership from a managerial perspective is definitive by successfully being able to coordinate and oversee the work activities of others so that their activities are completed efficiently and effectively (PEARSON, 6th edn). A positive environment is a productive environment and ââ¬Ëemotionally intelligentââ¬â¢ managers are not only responsible but capable of ensuring that positivity levels are achieved. Research has linked positive moods to creativity suggesting, ââ¬Ëwhen leaders are in positive moods they may be more creativeââ¬â¢ (Isen et al. , 1987). This positively influenced level of creativity allows for managers to ââ¬Ëcome up with a compelling vision that contrasts with existing conditionsââ¬â¢ (Jennifer M George, 2000, p1040) thus effectively filling the fundamental aims of successful management. In conclusion, while the understanding and implementation of emotional intelligence in the workplace can be obtained through practical experience and a manager to employee work relationship can be developed. Previous knowledge of EI will resolve conflicts and complications both efficiently and effectively. The need for managers to have knowledge of emotional intelligence in order to successfully manage in the workplace is crucial. Successful application of EI is needed in order to achieve optimal employee and customer satisfaction. Malgudi Days free essay sample
Jennifer Glasper English 3036 Monday, March 6, 2012 Professor: E. Chou Malgudi Days, R. K Narayan The tasks take one short story by Narayan that you have read and show that it has literary traits it has in common with other short stories by Narayan. In most of these short stories we can see that the theme is an important idea of the author. The themes that are seen throughout most of the stories written by R. K. Narayan are adversities, difficulties and overcoming those difficulties by having the strength to persevere so that the individuals can move forward in their lives. In the story of the Willing Slave, we see a maid doing everything she can to make it during difficult times and to also give money to her family. Even though Ayah is poor, she doesnââ¬â¢t let it affect her too much, she understand that no matter what is going on around her, Ayah must continue to move forward and make the best of a difficult situation. We will write a custom essay sample on Malgudi Days or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The theme in this story is a harsh reality for many individuals throughout the country of India, but the most important aspect of India and its people is the fact that they understand and realize that poverty is surrounding them but have the mind set to overcome that adversity without letting it overtake them. In The Snake Song, we see the same type of theme as in Willing Slave, when a young Talkative Man has dreams and desires to become wealthy someday, by being a musician. The Talkative Man is poor and doing all he can to survive, so he can make a better life for himself. The one dilemma that is going to hold him back is his selfishness, and his unwillingness to assist another individual that is in need whom he turns away. He was extremely self-centered and one night he rejected a man that needed assistance. The manââ¬â¢s hunger was the cause of The Talkative Manââ¬â¢s irritation. His rejection was unnecessary since the mendicant had praised The Talkative Manââ¬â¢s artistic skill and only wanted food. By contrast, the elderly Ayah appears as an obsequious person that is ââ¬ËHellbentââ¬â¢ on pleasing her masters regardless of their social position or age. Playing games with the child, Radha, was an example of the extent Ayah would go to placate the family. The sequence of events describing Ayahââ¬â¢s willingness to satisfy each and every request made by others is an un- pleasant reading for many people, because Ayahââ¬â¢s servitude can be seen in other counties besides India and in other spheres of existence. ââ¬ËA willing Slaveââ¬â¢ generates sadness.

Communication is an aspect of life that all people, young and old, need in their lives as there are endless possibilities of expressing oneââ¬â¢s emotions The WritePass Journal
Communication is an aspect of life that all people, young and old, need in their lives as there are endless possibilities of expressing oneââ¬â¢s emotions Introduction Communication is an aspect of life that all people, young and old, need in their lives as there are endless possibilities of expressing oneââ¬â¢s emotions Introduction Communication is an aspect of life that all people, young and old, need in their lives as there are endless possibilities of expressing oneââ¬â¢s emotions and thoughts therefore there are endless possibilities of communicating regardless of whether it is effective or not. Communication can be verbal and by having a verbal conversation with someone or simply using facial expressions, one can trigger a reaction to something that was said or done. People can also use their body language to express their feelings or attitudes such as hunching over which indicates boredom or tiredness. Whether people fight or converse, they will always be communicating and this communication will always effect the interactions between humanity. How people interact with one another depends on a variety of aspects such as; moods, awareness, emotions or voice projections. Sometimes individuals interact by masking their feelings behind their words or by listening to and understanding others whereas others will comment whenever and wherever the opportunity to do so arises. Unfortunately, in our generation, people interact in ways that are influenced by the society in which they live. When living in an urbanized society it is unlikely that an individual will not be influenced by developments such as technology which has become a commodity each individual must have because it makes global networking easier and allows for an increase in multi- tasking and complex learning tasks to be done faster and at a cheaper rates. Although technology has made life easier and more interesting, by means of being able to ââ¬Å"surf the netâ⬠and play video games or Nintendo games, it has also limited face-to-face interactions between individuals and made it more ââ¬Ëacceptableââ¬â¢ for society to express their feelings using emoticons, such as smiley faces, to communicate with others on an ââ¬Ëemotionalââ¬â¢ level. In past generations letters were used to interact and it was considered sophisticated.à Children were taught to play the piano and politely address any individual. Then again they did not have technology to rock their world. Children today use their phones to send messages to their siblings who are just a room away from them. This contributes to the fact that when it comes to direct interactions with people children become withdrawn because they literally donââ¬â¢t know how to converse unless itââ¬â¢s done over a phone . Technology has its advantages but its disadvantages as well but people have managed to do without it. Some individuals have mastered effective communication, where the possibilities of communication range from using fear to get a reaction and/or giving empathy or being brave enough to listen to those they know werenââ¬â¢t initially interested in interacting with them at all. These people acknowledge how and why they feel the way they feel before engaging in any situation they are face with and then react appropriately to get the desired outcome. Many individuals use common sense to analyse others and their surroundings before interacting with them whereas others take it to a whole new level. Individuals use fear to interact but instead they get arrogant smiling. Showing arrogance may get them an elegant reserve or endless expressions of anger or aggression. Some speak uncontrollably and overload others with information theyââ¬â¢ll never retain or they talk compulsively get rid of the person. Others blatantly show their lack of interest while others never succeed in getting their point across Communication can always be effective just as the author, Donovon said, ââ¬Å"Real communication is happening, if you feel well and are being understood while you understandâ⬠and the possibilities never end Bibliography www.wikipedia.orgà Retrieved on Friday the 1st April 2011. www.suite101.com Retrieved on Friday the 1st April 2011. The Story of Jessie Redmon Fauset
The Story of Jessie Redmon Fauset Jessie Redmon Fauset was born the seventh child of Annie Seamon Fauset and Redmon Fauset, a minister in the African Methodist Episcopal church. Jessie Fauset graduated from the High School for Girls in Philadelphia, the only African American student there. She applied to Bryn Mawr, but that school instead of admitting her helped her to enroll at Cornell University, where she may have been the first black woman student. She graduated from Cornell in 1905, with a Phi Beta Kappa honor. Early Career She taught Latin and French for one year at Douglass High School in Baltimore and then taught, until 1919, in Washington, DC, at what became, after 1916, Dunbar High School. While teaching, she earned her M.A. in French from the University of Pennsylvania.à She also began to contribute writings to Crisis, the magazine of the NAACP. She later received a degree from the Sorbonne. Literary Editor of the Crisis Fauset served as literary editor of theà Crisis from 1919 to 1926. For this job, she moved to New York City. She worked with W.E.B. DuBois, both at the magazine and in his work with the Pan African Movement. She also traveled and lectured extensively, including overseas, during her tenure with theà Crisis.à Her apartment in Harlem, where she lived with her sister, became a gathering place for the circle of intellectuals and artists associated with Crisis. Jessie Fauset wrote many of the articles, stories, and poems in theà Crisisà herself, and also promoted such writers as Langston Hughes, Countee Cullen, Claude McKay, and Jean Toomer. Her role in discovering, promoting, and giving a platform to African American writers helped to create an authentic black voice in American literature. From 1920 to 1921, Fauset publishedà The Brownies Book, a periodical for African American children. Her 1925 essay, ââ¬Å"The Gift of Laughter,â⬠is a classic literary piece, analyzing how American drama used black characters in roles as comics. Writing Novels She and other women writers were inspired to publish novels about experiences like their own when a white male novelist, T.S. Stribling, published Birthright in 1922, a fictional account of an educated mixed-race woman. Jessie Faucet published four novels, the most of any writer during the Harlem Renaissance:à There Is Confusionà (1924),à Plum Bunà (1929),à The Chinaberry Treeà (1931), andà Comedy: American Styleà (1933).à Each of these focuses on black professionals and their families, facing American racism and living their rather non-stereotypical lives. After theCrisis When she left theà Crisis in 1926, Jessie Fauset attempted to find another position in publishing but found that racial prejudice was too great a barrier. She taught French in New York City, at DeWitt Clinton High School from 1927 to 1944, continuing to write and publish her novels. In 1929, Jessie Fauset married an insurance broker and World War I veteran, Herbert Harris. They lived with Fausets sister in Harlem until 1936 and moved to New Jersey in the 1940s. In 1949, she briefly served as a visiting professor at Hampton Institute and taught for a short time at Tuskegee Institute. After Harris died in 1958, Jessie Fauset moved to her half-brothers home in Philadelphia where she died in 1961. Literary Legacy Jessie Redmon Fausets writings were revived and republished in the 1960s and 1970s, though some preferred writings about African Americans in poverty rather than Fausetââ¬â¢s depictions of an elite.à By the 1980s and 1990s, feminists had refocused attention on Fausetââ¬â¢s writings. A 1945 painting of Jessie Redmon Fauset, painted by Laura Wheeler Waring, hangs in the National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC. Physicians Ethics and Lethal Injection Research Paper
Physicians Ethics and Lethal Injection - Research Paper Example Basically this view involves the concept that that it is impermissible for the doctor or anyone else to terminate intentionally the life of an individual. The traditional view is that the intentional termination of human life is impermissible, irrespective of whether this goal is brought about by action or inaction. Is the action or refraining aimed at producing a death Is the termination of life sought, chosen or planned Is the intention deadly In order to better understand this concept, the notion of physicians participating in lethal injections will be discussed, and the point that the participation in lethal injections is an unethical concept of physicians will be revealed. The main objection against this argument is that of the patients' comfort, but many argue that we should not be as concerned with the comfort of murderers. Whether this is an important issue or not, the primary reason physicians should not participate in this action has to do with their own oaths as doctors; t heir purpose is to save lives, not to destroy them. First, it is important to present the statistics behind lethal injections when realizing their prevalence in certai... The execution involves three separate injections, that once administered lead to a painless, trouble free execution and it takes approx. 8 minutes for the criminal to die. It is the most reliable form of capital punishment in the United States today and is used by 37 states. However, it is the actual process that is the longest of all methods of execution. The protocol, from start to finish, takes between 30 and 45 minutes. This is a punishment in itself, as the condemned awaits his inevitable execution. Banner points out how the long procedure causes mental torture because of the anticipation of what is to come. Many other countries use the lethal injection as their most common form of capital punishment. Guatemala, for example put two suspected kidnappers to death in 2002, simultaneously and actually televised the execution (Rachels, 1995).Understating the concoction that is injected into the accused is also important to understanding this debate. The drugs used to execute inmates in the US sometimes do not always work according to plan, causing slow and painful deaths that in turn are in breech of constitutional bans on cruel punishment. (Ramsey, 1999) Even when used in the right way, the lethal injection method of execution appears to have caused some prisoners to suffocate while they were conscious and unable to move. For example, in 1986, drug addict Randy Woolls had to help execution technicians find a suitable vein for the injections; and in Raymond Landry's case in 1988, the catheter used to inject the chemicals flew out of his arm and sprayed chemicals all over the execution chamber, right in front of several state witnesses. On this occasion, a curtain was drawn preventing the spectators from seeing what was going on, and they were

A MIS will also ascertain that there is an objective system that will be used record and generate information whenever it is required (Nowduri, 2011). It also reduces the labor expenses that would have been incurred if the information was handled manually and all these in return helps in achieving the organizational goal of efficiency. A MIS will provide decision makers facts, which they will use to make a decision and this enhances job performance in the organization due to availability of information (Kroenke, 2010). At the top management level, an MIS will provide management with information necessary to make strategic decisions.at the lower levels, the MIS will provide a means for monitoring activities in an organization and a distribution channel for information from management to the employees. Management information systems will help organizations to make proper decisions, and they will carry out a series of steps when aiding in decision making. The first step is intelligence gathering, where the system will define the problem, gather related data and identify the constraints. The second stage is the design phase where alternatives to the solution of the problem are identified. The last phase is making the choice between the alternatives and this marks the end of the decision making process from where the decision made can be communicated to everyone in the organization. Despite the importance of using management information systems, they also have potential risks associated with them. Management will use the decisions made by the MIS in coming up with decisions and decisions made from ineffective or inaccurate MIS may undermine the efficiency of an organization, and this is because it cause operational risks, which
