The Environmental Protection Agency ( Epa ) - 1690 Words

Abstract Power plants are the largest source of U.S. mercury emissions to the air. Once mercury from the air reaches water, microorganisms can change it into methyl mercury, a highly toxic form that builds up in fish which is how people are primarily exposed to mercury by eating the contaminated fish. In the year 2011, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) signed a rule to reduce emissions of toxic air pollutants, specifically Mercury, from coal fired power plants. The resulting Mercury and Air Toxic Standards (MATS) are used to reduce the emissions of Mercury and other hazardous toxic substances resulting from coal fired power plants. The three control measures that the EPA recommends to reduce the emission of Mercury are selective catalytic reduction (SCR), selective noncatalytic reduction (SNCR), and ammonia (NH3). The EPA claims that once these emission reduction controls are in place, Mercury emissions will be reduced 70 percent to fifteen tons per year by the year 2018 and the EPA estimates that mercury deposition would be reduced 8 percent on average in the Eastern United States. However, I believe that with new EPA mandated emission reduction controls in place on coal fired power plants, Mercury levels will be slightly reduced but still higher than in those areas without a coal fired power plant. The emission reduction controls will assist in lowering mercury removal but not to an acceptable level within the environment. The Unwanted Free Essays

I am writing this letter because I want to recommend the book –â€Å"The Unwanted† by Kien Nguyen to 11th graders in high school. â€Å"The Unwanted† is a work of nonfiction and it is about the Vietnam War. This is the true story about Kien’s childhood life after the communist takeover Vietnam in 1975. We will write a custom essay sample on The Unwanted or any similar topic only for you Order Now In my opinion, war is cruel for people, and it causes many different social issues. The students in 11th grade are studying history, and history is a requirement subject in high school. The major theme in this book for 11th graders is the effect of war. Since teens need to study history at school, they only learn from the book. However, they never imagine a war is always related to our life. The reason for 11th graders to learn from war is discrimination. Discrimination happens in every country and discrimination still exists in our life, especially in the United States. The United States is a multi-ethnic country, and there are many different races’ people live in the same community. Discrimination not only happens during the war, but it is also happens in school. At school, teens are studying with different races of classmates, and they have different cultures and backgrounds. So teens should learn how to get alone with each other. For example, Kien is a mix-raced and he is a good student whom his teachers are proud of his accomplishments. His teacher recommends him to be a leader in front of parade. He is very proud and it is a good challenge for him to do his best. He wants his mother to be proud of him too. However, his dean cancels his qualification before the parade begins because of his mix-raced. His mother is ashamed about Kien’s mix-raced and she is very worry about him. When the police go to check their family status after the fall of Saigon; his mother worries about his identity. If the police know about Kien’s identity, they might take him to jail. So his mother dyes his hair to make him looks like a Vietnamese. To dye Kien’s hair and hide his identity shows Kien is discriminated by social community. Although racial discrimination exists in our society, people take pride in mix-raced. Most people nowadays consider mix-raced kids as beautiful or handsome. However, mix-raced kids are discriminated during the Vietnam War; their fates are terrible because the communist take over Vietnam and American help their opposite side. Therefore, the communist consider American as enemies. So the discrimination nfluences teens 11th graders because they need to know more about the social problem in the war. Also, teens should learn the racial discrimination from Kien’s experience. It could always remind teens to get alone with others when they have discrimination at school or in community. Besides, learning more discrimination information also helps the m to improve their historical knowledge. Another reason for me to recommend this book to 11th grader is appreciation of Kien’s hard life after the war. Now, our living standard is better than the life in war; however, some families are still facing financial problem. Also, Kien’s life is affected by Vietnam War which he must work hard to support his family’s financial problem. Moreover, 11th graders can learn from Kien’s experience, begin to live independently. So, this is a good chance for the teens to learn a lesson from Kien’s experience. For example, Kien was living in a wealthy family, and he doesn’t need to worry about his life. However, his life has changed after Vietnam War. He works hard to less his mother’s burden. Sometimes he feels helpless because no one can help him; everyone is worrying about their life at the same time. He finally learns how to take care of his family and earn money for his family. He is matured by his life and he acts like an adult. No matter how bad the living environment Kien has, he still accepts it. As teenagers, we should learn from Kien’s life experience to handle our difficulties. Also, this is the useful and helpful message for 11th grader; they can learn a lesson from Kien’s hard life and learn how to handle the difficulties if they have family financial problem. On the other hand, survival and hope are the most important factors in our life. Everyone has a hope when they live in the world and works hard to find a living way. If people do not have a hope to survive, they might live like a person without soul. Also, some of people never give up when they lose their hope; they try to find their hope to survive. But some teens do not think so, sometimes they feel hopeless when they are facing difficulties without any helps. In this book, Kien is hopeless just after the fall of Vietnam. He is too little to handle all of his difficulties in his life. Because he is the oldest son for his mother, he has to take all of the responsibilities. Kien never gives up when he is facing his difficulties. He tries his best to help his family out of Vietnam. His father is an American and he is looking for his father; he needs his father’s help, and he wants his father takes him out of his misfortune. From his difficulties to a way out of Vietnam, it gives him a hope in his life. When 11th graders study many different wars around the world, some of them might feel people in the war are hopeless and helpless; they don’t want to accept their misfortune. It also helps teens to understand even the environment is terrible, they still can find their way to live. As a result, survival is very important in everyone’s life. I like this book very much after I finish it. I am so excited and nervous by Kien’s life changes in this book. I really want to recommend this book to 11th graders who are interest in history and want to study history, because students in 11th grade begin to study history and it is the requirement subject in high school. So, this book can helps them to know more details of historical events in Vietnam War. From Kien’s life, hope and discrimination in the war, they can get the different point of view in the book. Also, they will learn how Kien helps his family and handles his hardship in his life. Now, the teenagers don’t understand the difficulties after the war, because they live under their parents’ protection. For some teens are mix-raced like Kien, they can compare the different situation about the discrimination with Kien’s experience. Before, I had heard some histories from my parents about the Vietnam War and I had learned a little bit at school, and I don’t know how people live during the war. Now, I can image how Kien’s life in Vietnam and how hard he lives under the community society. How to cite The Unwanted, Papers

How i met your mother free essay sample

My favourite sitcom is â€Å"How I met your mother â€Å" . It is an American show which was first premiered on CBS in 2005 , the story revolves around the protagonist of the show Ted Mosby and his group of friends . In the year 2030 , Ted recites to his children the events which led him to meeting their mother(Milioti) and hence the name of the show is quite apt . Ted Mosby is an architect in New York City , the narrative deals with his best friends , including the news anchor Robin Scherbatsky , the eccentric, womaniser Barney Stinson and the couple Marshell Eriksen and Lily Aldrin . The series explores many storylines including a love triangle between Ted, Robin and Barney, a change in their careers . The show has nine seasons , the last one is to be aired in March 2014 This show was created by Craig Thomas and Carter Boys . The show belongs to the romantic comedy genre and is famous for its unique structure and eccentric humour , the show has received positive reviews throughout most of its run and managed to grab the attention of the audience. Josh Radnor as Ted Mosby an architecture teacher is the central charcter of the series who is on a quest for happiness and his â€Å" the one† , the woman he will marry. Ted is the most mature of the group and he goes to great lengths to profess his love to the woman in his lifr, but they all fade away after a while . He does eventually meet the loveof his life who is first seen in the finale of season 8 . Marshall Eriksen is Ted’s best friend , who is married to Lily , with whom he has been in love since his freshman year of college and serves as an inspiration for Ted to find his true love . Robins is a new anchor and Ted’s ex girlfriend , she has emigrated from Canada to take a job in New York where she meets Ted and his friends . The character of Barney Stinson is one of my favourite , he could be actually be called as the life of the show ,the phrases used by him such as â€Å"legendary† , â€Å"suit up â€Å" and spice to his character , although a womaniser his character has been appraised by all and was awarded with Favourite Tv Comedy Actor award. Lily Aldrin is the fifth friend , she is kindergarten teacher and is married to Marshall , Lily is the group’s moderator ,who is always there to resolve a conflict or to offer a shoulder to cry on , all the friends confine their secrets in her although she is terrible at keeping secrets . She is also very manipulative , often coaxing her friends behind the scenes to get her desired results , she keeps the group together . This show is one of my favourites since it is a light hearted comedy after a tiring day, i really enjoy watching this show since it is very humorous and entertaining for me , there is a new story in every episode , a few new characters are introduced and it is not linked to the previous episode thereby one can start watching it from any episode. The thirty minute episode is a complete laughter ride for me and acts as a real stress buster . For nine seasons the Mother of the children was not revealed and hence I used to be excited in finding out that who the actual mother of the kids is and wife of Ted , they have very well scripted the show keeping the buzz alive among the audience to keep watching the show for nine seasons to find out who actually is the Mother . I also like this particular serial since it depicts the strong ties among the friends , they go through various ups and downs in their lives , change in careers , loss of job , family problems but they stay together thick and thin . The show very well depicts the unbreakable bonds among these five friends , who always find time to spend together even in their busy lives, which i find quite commendable , although fictional characters but the bond depicted among them is quite strong . It depicts the sacred bond of friendship , how one would do anything dor the other with no questions asked. I like this show since it weaves a story , a story about how the universe and destiny keep weaving a weird scheme to get you where you are supposed to be and to be with the person you are meant to be with , every breath you take every choice you make is supposed to be working to get you where you are supposed to be . Like a cosmic plan that is working and you are like a puppet to it . The character of Barney one of my favourite thing about the show , although a womaniser , who is solely interested in seducing women , he is a very good person at heart , who would even sacrifice his life to help his friends , the character is very well played by Niel Patrick Harris and is loved by the audience too . On asking some of my other friends who watch this show they also pointed out similar reasons for liking it as it is romantic comedy, it is light and easy to digest after a heavy day , people are huge fans of the character played by Robbin as it is portrayed that she is an independent woman who has travelled to different parts of the world for her job , she  signifies strength and courage , she is a modern day woman who smokes cigar and can very well handle her scotch . This show has won People’s choice award for the favourite Network TV comedy show , the show has been nominated for 28 Emmy Awards. Stars Alyson Hannigan and Neil Patrick Harris have each received acting accolades, with both receiving People’s choice award, and Harris receiving Emmy and Golden Globe nominations.
